Pacific Coastline

“Jump on in! The water is fine!” We had a great time working on this seascape designed by Nic Hankins, who is the new host of the hit TV series: “The Joy of Painting.” Seascapes can sometimes be intimidating and this composition is a fantastic opportunity for beginners to “get their feet wet!” so to speak.

It’s amazing how a few simple strokes can bring the ocean to life! What I really love about this technique is how accessible it is for everyone, even if you're a first-time painter. By using the palette knife to create the waves, we were able to achieve that perfect frothy texture without getting bogged down by overly complicated steps. It’s all about trusting the process and letting the brush—or knife—do its work. The beauty of this seascape lies in its simplicity. The colors used for the waves perfectly complement the sky, making it feel like a peaceful yet dynamic scene. The contrast between the soft mint green and the darker blues adds a touch of drama, giving the painting a tranquil feel. What was also striking about the painting session was the way it brought everyone together. There was something about capturing the peacefulness of the sea that allowed everyone to relax and really enjoy the moment. Whether it was a first-timer or someone more experienced, the group bonded over the joy of creating something beautiful.
