It was all smiles for this Thursday night gathering of painters. There was some healthy competition between co-workers in this group. I was given the honor of choosing which student had the “best painting!” Normally, I pride myself on setting a “judgement-free zone” while we paint and nobody is better than anybody else. However, they had already made a trophy for best painter and brought it to class! We are all using the same paint colors, the same brushes, and we are all following the same step-by-step instructions, yet each piece had its own unique flair, showcasing the creativity and diverse techniques of everyone involved. Some painted with bold strokes and bright colors, while others embraced subtle hues and intricate details. As the paintings lined up, it became clear that choosing a single "best" painting wasn’t just about technique—it was about the emotion, the story, and the personal touch each artist brought to the canvas.Ultimately, I made my choice, but not without acknowledging that everyone in the room was a winner in their own right.
What struck me most was the camaraderie and support shared between everyone, despite the competition. It was a reminder that art isn’t about being perfect or having the “best” technique; it’s about self-expression and connection. The evening ended with smiles, a few playful “bragging rights,” and a shared sense of accomplishment that we all walked away with.
